This victory sends JOSTUM into the upper half of the table sitting alongside UNILORIN while ABU remains rooted in the bottom half.
The game played at the University of Ilorin main bowl began with a bang as JOSTUM wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.
In the 11th minute, Amodu Unite, wearing the No. 9 shirt, latched onto a well-timed through ball, splitting ABU’s defense. His cool finish past the ABU goalkeeper set the tone for what would be a challenging day for the lads from ABU.
Despite the early setback, ABU remained resolute in the first half. Both teams shared possession evenly, each with 50% but it was JOSTUM who looked the more dangerous going forward.
JOSTUM carved out multiple chances, managing 6 shots on goal compared to ABU’s 3. However, ABU’s defense stood firm. Crucial saves from their goalkeeper ensured that the scoreline remained respectable heading into halftime.
The midfield battle was fierce. The battle for supremacy was evident as the game was ridden with fouls and tackles.
As the match wore on, ABU struggled to contain JOSTUM’s attacks particularly the major threat posed by target man, Amodu Unite whose pace and positioning troubled their backline throughout the game. This was evident in the referee’s decision to issue a total of three yellow cards to the ABU side.
The second half continued in much the same fashion. ABU fought valiantly to claw their way back into the game but their attacking efforts were repeatedly stifled by JOSTUM’s well-organized defense which recorded an impressive 70% successful clearance rate. ABU’s best chances came through set-pieces, but they couldn’t convert any of their opportunities.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, ABU pushed higher up the pitch in search of an equalizer. This left them vulnerable to a counterattack and JOSTUM capitalized.
In the 92nd minute, Amodu Unite once again found himself in the right place at the right time, seizing on a loose ball after a swift counter attack and slotting home his second goal of the match, sealing the 2-0 victory for JOSTUM.
Although ABU had their moments, with a few promising shots and blocked efforts, they lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
JOSTUM’s win, spearheaded by Amodu Unite, gives them three crucial points and positions them comfortably in the top half of the table. In sharp contrast, ABU alongside PAAU now sit in the lower ranks, needing a significant turnaround in their upcoming fixtures in Matchday 2 and 3 of group B to avoid falling further behind.
