UNILORIN Stages Stunning Comeback to Knock UNN Out and Book Varsity Cup Final Spot

In what turned out to be a thrilling reversal of fortunes, the University of Ilorin overturned their first leg 3-1 deficit against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)  to advance to the final on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate finish.

It was a memorable game for the home fans as their team delivered a flawless performance on home turf to keep their dreams alive and end UNN’s impressive run.

Following UNN’s win at Nsukka, the hosts were faced with the uphill task of overturning their loss. In what could be described as a sunny afternoon, both teams enjoyed even possession. However, as the game progressed, it was UNILORIN’s decisive finishing that proved to be the difference. Backed by a boisterous home crowd, they clawed back the aggregate to 3-3 and  claimed victory on the crucial away-goal rule.

UNILORIN struck first in the 33rd minute when Atolagbe Emmanuel converted from the penalty spot. The player calmly dispatched the ball past the UNN goalkeeper to give the hosts the lead and send a ripple of hope through their bench and in the stands.

This goal which came early in the game proved to be a turning point in the game and ignited the belief that a comeback was possible. Just before halftime, Kamaldeen doubled UNILORIN’s advantage in the 45th minute. The attacker scored a clutch goal to complete the comeback.

With the scoreline now in favour of the home team, Kamaldeen’s goal set the stage for a fiercely contested second half where UNN despite their efforts were unsuccessful in breaking through their opponents’ defense.

From a statistical point of view, UNILORIN’s iron-fist defence approach was evident. They employed the use of tactical fouls and their backline remained solid. Aided by several vital clearances and two crucial saves from their goalkeeper, they ensured that the easterners failed in their quest to advance.

AbdulSobur Habeeb, the standout performer clinched the coveted Moniepoint sponsored “Man of the Match” award for his phenomenal contributions in keeping the UNN attack at bay and ensuring  that UNILORIN’s 2-0 lead remained untouched.

UNN who showed promise in the group stages and dominated the first leg were left frustrated over their failure to get a goal away from home. Their inability to convert their chances in this crucial game proved costly. This result condemned them to a third place battle, a tough ending for a team that showed remarkable promise throughout their Varsity Cup journey.

For the Afonja Boys, this victory epitomizes the undeniable top character and mentality that has characterized their performances so far in the tournament.

Now, with a place in the final, they will look to carry forward the momentum and solidify their claim as the tournament’s best team when they take on JOSTUM in the final
